nature of things

i just came home from a most beautiful yoga class.
i feel full, loved, at peace.
during savasana our teacher read a long and winding poem, all of it touching my heart.
but what spoke the loudest was (and i am repeating from memory,)

...we get caught up with our fascination of stuff, but the very nature of stuff is that it's never enough. when buddah came out of the wilds of the jungle to see the monks he told them that stuff will never fill you up, will never make you happy, because it will never be enough. or something like that.

love that.

Don't know if this is duplicate; if so, just delete. This is such a simple and profound truth but one that bears repeating and remembering. It's so easy to get caught up in the acquisition of stuff but in truth, it's the intangibles that are really the meat of life, like love, relationships, nature. It's so interesting that numerous studies show that people that are poor actually are happier than rich people. Of course, you need food and a roof over your head, but more stuff just complicates life and does not fill the void.

Thanks for sharing this wisdom.

jan,
thanks for commenting, it means so much to me. i couldn't agree more. i know from experience that as long as basic needs are taken care of with the occasional indulgence, life is good.
a very wise friend told me recently that whatever we are trying to achieve financially better be worth the time that our husbands are trading for it at work. that hit me hard and made me realize that i must strike the delicate balance between too much and just enough.

You have wise friends. It is delicate, and if we keep it foremost in our minds, it just gets easier to make the more modest choices and make the more important things a priority.
